Form, Pattern, Structure

I remember my second year photography degree exhibition, and while it was a collaborative ensemble, the results of each individual photographer varied wildly between each presentation of work. For that exhibition, that orchestration seemed to work without too much accusation.

Here, however, for the Form, Pattern and Structure exhibition at Huddersfield’s soon-to-be-demolished-Piazza-shopping-centre-turned-whatever-it-wants-to-be-cheap-to-no-rental artistic-breathing-space, the outcomes were evidently intrinsically linked by their theme to such a more substantial extent.

Above, for example, a close up image of a rock formation sits contrasted to an aerial drone image, work made by two different photographers but forming a coherent and interesting myriad of interconnected ideas of form, structure and materiality. Atmospheric and ghostly depictions of ruined abbeys, sit fittingly alongside hair follicles. Leaves appear like networks of footpaths and mountain ranges like folds in a linen sheet. All-together, the photographic works conjure simultaneous micro and macro worlds of patterns and formal arrangements in a coherent and cohesive presentation while also managing to express the individual differences in perspective of the various photographer’s artistic outlooks on the theme.
